Google has provided further clarification on its cryptocurrency policy with regards to the advertising of blockchain-based games involving NFTs. Starting from the 15th of September 2023, Google will permit advertisers to promote NFT games that do not feature gambling-related content.
Google initially permitted cryptocurrency advertisements a couple of years ago, as an informative note.
In a statement, Google stated, “Commencing on the 15th of September 2023, advertisers offering NFT games that do not endorse gambling-related content can advertise their products and services if they meet the specified requirements and gain Google’s certification.”
Google has specified that the promotion of blockchain-based games involving NFTs is permissible. For instance, NFT games that enable players to purchase in-game items, such as virtual clothing for their characters, weaponry, or armour with enhanced statistics, which can be consumed or utilised within the game to improve the user’s experience or aid their progress.
There are three specific examples of NFT games that are prohibited:
1. The promotion of games where players can stake or wager NFTs in return for the chance to win items of real-world value, including other NFTs. Some non-exhaustive examples include games that enable players to stake NFTs in exchange for fungible tokens like cryptocurrencies.
2. The promotion of social casino games that reward NFTs. Some non-exhaustive examples comprise simulated casino gambling, such as poker, slots, or roulette, that offer the opportunity to win NFTs.
3. The promotion of destinations for “real money gambling,” encompassing gambling-related advertisements that appear on your game’s platform.
It should be noted that violations of this policy will not result in immediate account suspension without prior notice. A warning will be issued at least seven days before any suspension of your account takes effect.
